Grit Removal

After the step of screening there follows the grit removal. Small particles can not be separated by the screening systems, they are by means of sedimentation and velocity reduction subsequently deposited in the grit trap. The removed sand/water mixture is then separated inside grit classifier or grit washer and often can be re-used, for example as filling sand in construction.

Circular Grit Trap

The Vortex Grit Trap is used to screen and wash sand present in water. Water flows into a concrete circular tank with a cone-shaped bottom where some rotating paddles move the sewage continuously. The particular movement induced by the mechanical action of paddles cause a secondary transversal current meeting the main current of sewage, helps in accumulation of sand in the bottom side of cone. Sand accumulated in the cone bottom is sucked up by an hydro extracting pipe. The clarified water flows out from the exit situated in the top of tank.

Longitudinal Grit Trap

A high performance and low operating cost equipment. It consists of a long tank and a screw conveyor at its bottom that collects grit in a sump. The machine can be equipped with an aeration system for efficient FOG (Fats, Oil, Grease) removal.

Grit Classifier

The grit classifier is used to separate solids from water. It consists of a separating container and a screw conveyor. Application areas range from municipal sewage plant to separation of sediment and heavy materials in production and process waste water in the chemical, food, paper and waste disposal industries. The grit separator provides high performance coupled with low operating costs.

Function:
Inflow of the grit/water mixture can be either under pressure or via gravity line. The tangential feed induces a rotary movement in the water which causes the heavier substances such as sand to sink to the apex of the funnel, where they are removed and dewatered via the screw conveyor. The grit is thus rendered substantially free of organic matter. The grit separator effects a continual separation of the grit from the waste water flow while reducing the organic portion of the solids and dewatering the grit.

Grit Washer

The grit washer unit consists of two basic items - grit wash tank and discharge screw.

The grit/water mixture is fed in via the inlet flange of the grit wash tank. Organic matter is held in suspension and floated off while the grit is settled in the container. With the addition of water, the sedimented grit is separated from the remaining organic constituents using a stirring device and up-current technique. The grit is removed from the container, de-watered and discharged via a discharge screw.

With the addition of a bunker at the upstream side, the grit wash unit can be extended to become a reception station for sewer grit. If a fractionating and washing drum is positioned between the bunker and the wash unit, the installation can be additionally used for conditioning street sweepings.
